Kozhikode

Kozhikode, a coastal city with a population of 0.43 million, is known for its lush green surroundings, substantial rainfall, and wetlands of national importance. Yet, local water sources are facing severe threats, including some wetlands, ponds, and green spaces in desperate need of attention, protection, and restoration.

Type of issue

Disaster resilience

Increased frequency and intensity of flooding has become a major problem faced by the city, such as the 2018 Kerala floods, and have exposed the vulnerability of the Kerala coast to disasters. The abundance of water bodies including rivers and wetlands, and rampant development often at the price of degradation of such natural resources increases the effect of the flooding. The lack of proper drainage networks floods the arterial roads during the monsoons. This problem requires a sustainable solution, especially in the wake of urban development.
